Dilworth has been closely involved in the development of Made Smarter since its launch in 2018, working with Government and industry to create a national initiative that helps manufacturing SMEs adopt digital technologies, improve leadership capability and boost productivity.

He first began his career in manufacturing, spending 25 years in the sector before moving into economic development with the North West Development Agency. He later joined The Growth Company, where he has delivered a range of regional and national Government-funded programmes.

As Programme Manager for the North West adoption pilot, delivered by The Growth Company, he oversaw the introduction of a £20 million, three-year scheme that became the model for national rollout. He later collaborated with the Department for Business and Trade to refine the adoption framework now implemented across all English regions.

In the North West, the programme has engaged with over 2,300 manufacturers and supported more than 400 technology projects. These projects are forecast to create almost 2,000 new jobs, upskill nearly 3,500 roles and add £287 million to the regional economy, Made Smarter said.

“This was completely unexpected and a lovely surprise, and I would like to thank His Majesty for bestowing this honour upon me," Dilworth commented. "At the same time, I see this as recognition of the Made Smarter team, past and present, who have been fundamental in turning an ambitious idea into a programme that is delivering real impact for manufacturers across the country.”
